Hamptons Retreat

An abandoned firehouse in Amagansett was transformed into a picturesque weekend home created by an interior designer for himself. Recognizing the potential of the structure, the designer envisioned a weekend residence with an air of old European nobility, a folly plunked in the middle of an expansive garden. The house’s second-floor storage was gutted to create an airy, high-ceilinged living room, complete with a charcoal mural. Giant firehouse doors were replaced by steel-and-glass doors, visually extending the with a terrace and beyond into a walled garden. The house was furnished with a mix of existing furniture, sourced from the designer’s Manhattan apartment, a former residence in East Hampton, and even a showhouse project, turning a dilapidated structure into a one-of-a-kind weekend retreat.
