Art-Filled Nantucket Retreat Dining Room

Art-Filled Nantucket Retreat

Designed for a longtime client, a 7-bedroom spec house was completely reconfigured, opened up, and furnished with a mix of custom pieces, Paris antique shop finds, and the family’s own furniture, art, and objects. The large living/ dining room is the center of the home. A custom-designed dining table, covered in zinc and nails, is contrasted beautifully with restored period French chairs. The hanging globe lamps once graced a bridge over the Seine. A custom-made oval canvas rug protects the floor while indicating cardinal directions. The low ceilings were painted glossy pale blue to add a sense of height. Broken down into a series of functional rooms and comfortable nooks, the house feels spacious yet intimate and is filled with art and decorative objects, mixing highbrow paintings with found objects, such as a wooden foundry mold turned into a wall sculpture. Unexpected repurposing of materials – like custom shades made from vintage London bus destination signs in the guest bedroom- is the recurring theme in this characterful house.
